When AI can produce copies and competent variations of almost anything in seconds, value shifts to what cannot be copied. This overview explains Kevin Kelly’s eight “generatives” and lists AI businesses and products that already build on each of them.
Background: Kevin Kelly, co-founder of WIRED, first wrote “Better Than Free” in 2008. Tim Ferriss republished an updated version on July 17, 2026. Kelly’s thesis: “When copies are super abundant, they become worthless, and stuff which can’t be copied becomes scarce and valuable.” He calls the eight uncopyable values generatives because they must be generated in the exchange with the buyer.

1. Immediacy: getting it first
A free copy appears eventually, but people pay to get something first or the moment it is made, including access to beta versions.
- Forward Future Frontier Pass: paid membership with early access to selected interviews, some never published.
- OpenAI GPT-6: paying tiers received GPT-6 first; answers can start while the model is still “thinking”.
- Yumento: an AI study platform offering beta-phase subscription discounts to early supporters.
- Agent morning briefings: listed among real OpenClaw agent use cases.

2. Personalization: made for one person
The generic version is free; a version tailored to one person is worth paying for. It requires an ongoing relationship and creates “stickiness”.
- Yumento: placement test, the student’s own syllabus, a generated study plan and a parent view.
- Gauth AI Course: turns a topic into a narrated course with quizzes and an AI tutor; launched with 200+ math courses.
- Fitbit AI coach (Gemini): sleep insights grounded in a user’s wearable data, according to an X post.
- Work assistants: OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, Meta and Grok Bot compete because accumulated context makes an assistant hard to replace.
A Reddit discussion in r/edtech notes the limits: AI tutors help when they coach rather than answer, and struggle with spatial and visual topics.

3. Interpretation: explaining what it means
“Software, free; the software manual, $10,000.” The raw material is free; explanation and guidance are paid.
- Stratechery: subscribers pay $15 per month for interpretation of freely available tech news.
- Automattic: sells hosting, security and support around free, open-source WordPress.
- Forward Future University: $499 per year for 100+ AI lessons and weekly workshops, updated every week.
- Human-voice consulting: a Reddit commenter reports a consultant whose main value is helping clients “rediscover a human voice”.

4. Authenticity: proof that it is real
When fakes are everywhere, proof of origin and reliability gains value. Kelly notes watermarks can provide authenticity even though they cannot stop copying.
- VerifiedHuman: human-made certification, “pay what you can”, creators in 25+ countries, C2PA contributor member since 2026.
- Credtent: “Human Composed”, “AI-Assisted” and “AI-Generated” badges, with standard v3.1 from May 2026.
- Proudly Human: a human-made brand that appointed a North America managing director in September 2026.
- Spotify “Verified” badges: profiles that primarily represent AI-generated artists are currently not eligible; Reddit users doubt the badge proves an artist is human.
- Provider watermarks: OpenAI’s textGrain for the EU and Google DeepMind’s SynthID.
An “AI-Free” certification announced on Reddit drew mostly mocking replies, which shows how much credibility matters.

5. Accessibility: easy to get
Free does not mean easy to reach. People pay for convenience: everything in one place, organized, always available.
- Tab: an AI assistant in iMessage and WhatsApp that books flights and handles payments, with spending only after approval; valued at around $300 million.
- OpenAI “Dots”: personal agents with their own cloud environment; phones become remote controls.
- OpenClaw: an open-source agent system for email, CRM, briefings and smart home automations.
- Assistants as the “front door”: one assistant replaces opening email, drive and CRM separately.

6. Embodiment: the physical and live version
The digital copy has no body. People pay for physical editions, live performances and in-person experiences.
- Brandon Sanderson: a $41.75 million Kickstarter, the largest in its history, with premium physical editions.
- Live events instead of content: a business on Reddit reports replacing content with live physical and virtual events.
- AI to hardware: GPT-6 Astra designed circuit boards in KiCad, including a drone board that was manufactured.
- Forward Future Live: a weekly live show with guests from AI companies.
Eventbrite’s 2026 study reports that 79% of 18-to-35-year-olds plan to attend more events in 2026.

7. Patronage: paying to support
Audiences pay creators they value if it is easy, the amount is reasonable and the money clearly reaches the creator.
- The Marginalian: free and ad-free since 2006, funded by reader patronage.
- Daily Stoic: a free email to about one million subscribers, with paid coins, courses and memberships.
- Forward Future Frontier Pass: private community, member-only videos and a monthly live AMA.
- VerifiedHuman: “pay what you can” pricing.

8. Findability: being found
With millions of everything, being found is valuable. Kelly hopes AI can enable decentralized matchmaking between niche creators and their audiences. GEO (generative engine optimization) means improving how a brand appears in AI-generated answers.
- Visiblie: an AI-visibility startup reported to have raised €500K.
- Lantern: reported to have raised $3.1M and pivoted to GEO.
- Zeta and Senso: Zeta agreed to acquire Senso, whose technology powers its GEO offering, according to an X post.
- Gauge: a Y Combinator startup monitoring brand citations across AI assistants.
- Profound and LLMsRefs: named as AI citation tracking platforms.
A study commissioned by Reddit and Profound, reported by the BBC, found Reddit to be the most cited source across AI platforms.

Surprise tech news: companies pull back on AI after costly errors
An X News summary from October 16, 2026 reports that companies are scaling back rushed AI rollouts after employees spent hours fixing AI mistakes and security problems. According to the summary, Meta scaled back AI agent plans, Microsoft warned of a “doom loop” from low-quality “AI slop”, and McKinsey, Palantir and Nvidia restricted tools over data risks and costs. Nearly half of developers reported AI-written code failing in production. The summary is generated from posts on X and may change.
